With the Fourth of July holiday last week, I’ve been thinking a lot about the Founders of America. In fact, after being on the lookout for an interesting print of the famous painting of the signing of the Declaration of Independence by John Trumbull, I recently acquired the one pictured here at auction.

It’s a large print from 1839-1840, drawn on stone and hand-colored. It will hang in my office to remind me (1) how incredibly fortunate I am to live in this amazing country and chase my dreams here, and (2) the mind-blowing courage demonstrated by our Founding Fathers.

Can you imagine the immense risk the 56 signers of the Declaration took for their beliefs and their country? They openly declared their resistance to the most powerful country on the planet at the time. Many paid dearly: nine were killed. Nearly a third lost their fortunes. Many lost their homes.
May they be an inspiration to us all.
May we think of them when we feel fear.
May we compare the magnitude of their risk, which allows us to take our (comparatively tiny) risks in our sales work.
May we pick up the phone. May we ask for the business. May we request the referrals. May we offer to help our customers more, always.
If we apply just a fraction of their courage and boldness to our work, we will be ferociously successful.
These men deserve that from us.
And our customers deserve our courage and boldness as well. They deserve our great value.
