Consumer electronics companies release far too many products. Success in this business is not about the most possible product models. In fact, the high frequency of updates frustrates consumers. Why? Because the vast majority of new product releases are only slight improvements over the previous versions. And it makes your existing customers feel like the product they recently purchased is already out of date.
Rather, success in the consumer tech business is about loyal, satisfied and passionate mainstream customers. The more extremely happy customers you have, the more they talk about you, the more they market you, the more products you sell.
Shift your thinking: product updates are not the fastest path to new revenue. Thrilled customers are.
