Since Apple is the only consumer electronics manufacturer with widespread mainstream consumer evangelists, I’ve been digging around the Wide Worldly Web for insights about how Steve Jobs thinks. I’ve discovered a few, and I’m going to be highlighting them here periodically.
His approach to the world — and thereby, Apple’s — is certainly different than the leadership of competitors.
So, consider this thought from Jobs:
“Start small, think big. Don’t worry about too many things at once. Take a handful of simple things to begin with, and then progress to more complex ones. Think about not just tomorrow, but the future. Put a ding in the universe.”
My take on this: It’s far easier and more effective to make dramatic progress on one area at a time, than on ten areas at once.
For our purposes, this means, understand how your consumer use your products first. Then understand how they think about your products. Then use those words — from the mouths of your customers — to develop powerful messaging about your devices. Then identify the most effective communications platforms for you. Then deliver your messaging.
One step at a time, put a ding in the universe.
