From an AP-CNBC poll (May 2012):
- Half of all Americans think Facebook is a passing fad.
- 80 percent of all Americans have never bought a product or service as a result of an advertisement or comment on Facebook!
- Just 12 percent would feel safe making a purchase through Facebook.
From Hinge Marketing (January 2013):
- Just two percent of executive buyers consider your social media presence when making a professional services buying decision. (Rightfully.)
- In contrast, 35 percent of service providers think their social media presence makes an impact on a buying decision. (Ridiculously.)
On top of these staggering numbers, engaging in social media marketing takes time and energy away from techniques and approaches that actually do raise revenue. There are at least six marketing activities that work far more effectively than social media. Two of them: (1) building your own lists of prospective customers and (2) relentlessly providing value, helping them, demonstrating your impact.
I’m not saying you should not be on social media. Be there, but understand that on Facebook and Twitter, buyers are rare, and purchasing decisions are basically non-existent. Invest in your energies in marketing strategies that grow business. After all, do you want to engage in conversations, or in selling products and services?
