Today is the official launch date for my new book, The Revenue Growth Habit. I thought I’d share with you the process that led up to this moment.
This book has already pre-sold thousands of copies, but for years I couldn’t even find a literary agent to rep the book proposal. My last agent didn’t want it. My previous publisher didn’t want it. Literally dozens of agents and publishers declined it. As recently as last fall, I was ready to self-publish this book. Then, as I have many times in my life, I gave it one more effort, which put me well into double-digit efforts.
“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” — Thomas Edison.
On this try, I found an agent. She found interest, but the publisher I wanted to work with said no thanks. So I called the editor there, the one I preferred to work with. We had several nice conversations, and he went off to fight for the book internally. He won. I won. Wiley published the book this morning.
I wrote this book in one month, but it’s years in the making.
Here’s the take-away, and I’ve experienced this many times in my life: No doesn’t mean no. It simply means not now. So give your customers and prospects another chance to say yes. Success is often one additional effort away. Make it. There is literally no downside to trying again.
I don’t do launch parties because I find them indulgent, but I intend to celebrate with my family and a really good bottle of wine tonight. (Well, maybe this afternoon!)
