The biggest single reason Research in Motion finds itself in its current crisis is that is diverted its focus from its major strength — the Blackberry smart phone — to make a tablet. It lost focus, for an entire year.

Of course, while making a tragically incomplete and wildly panned Playbook tablet, RIM simply stopped developing the Blackberry. It couldn’t do both things well at the same time.

RIM needed to be more selective. Think Apple (computers, phones, tablets and software / content — that’s it!). Think Amazon — which manufactures the Kindle and little else. These are the two most successful consumer electronics companies on the planet. It’s because they’re focused, in large part. It’s because they say no to most things.

What’s your one greatest strength? Are you focusing on it?
