There are no Miracles...Only Intelligent Planning, Hard Work, and Perseverance

This year, a horse won the Triple Crown for the first time in 40 years. It was said be no longer possible, given changes in breeding, nutrition and other developments in the sport. (I was lucky enough to witness American Pharaoh winning the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, three boxes up from the rail, immediately across from the finish line.)

The Cubs, my Cubs!!, are 10 games over .500 and in possession of a wild card spot. Their starting lineup features four rookies, and a highly successful president and manger, both of whom know how to win championships. There is glory in the Cubs future.

In February, the Seattle Seahawks had the Super Bowl title sewn up. With the ball on the Patriots’ goal line and the league’s strongest running back ready fall forward for one yard and the winning touchdown. Instead, they threw the ball and the Patriots intercepted it, sealing a miraculous win.

The Chicago Blackhawks were down three games to two to a punishing Anaheim Ducks team in this year’s playoffs. One of Anaheim’s players said “No human can withstand that many hits.” The Blackhawks withstood them, won the next two games, and went on to win this year’s Stanley Cup.

Every year, there are “miracles” in sports…and business. Except they are not miracles. They are the outcome of intelligent planning, hard work, and perseverance. The good news for us is that revenue growth is much easier than winning championships or Triple Crowns. To grow business, we must simply tell more people about more of what they can buy from us. We must do so consistently, systematically, even when we are rejected, and even when we don’t want to.

I speak from experience: I’ve seen depths in my career which I did not know if I could come back from. Every business owner can think back to similar moments. And yet, here you are. Here we are. They’re not miracles. Your effort and perseverance got you here. I am giving you the plan. Now use that same effort and perseverance to grow your business dramatically.
