The discomfort with asking your good customers for detailed testimonials is yours, not theirs. They’d be happy to tell you about what they love about working with you. I know this because each year I ask hundreds of my clients’ customers this question as a part of our revenue growth projects. Your customers know why they stay with you. They think about it each time the competition calls, and they decide to stay with you.
The discomfort with asking for referrals is yours, not your customers’. If you asked properly, they would give properly.
The discomfort with offering more products and services to customers is yours. Your customers would be happy to buy more from you, if only they knew the other ways you could help them.
The discomfort with following up on quotes or proposals is yours. Your customers would appreciate that you care enough to follow up. Because the competition probably isn’t.
When you call your customers to ask them for testimonials, or referrals, or to tell them more about your offerings, or to follow up on proposals, you are not imposing; you are not selling; you are not promoting; you are not stepping on toes; you are not taking their time. You are simply helping them more. For testimonials, this looks like this: “We are trying to serve you even better, and we’re looking for your thoughts and feedback on our work. What are some of your favorite things about working us?” Then your customers will glow about you for 10 minutes.
What is there to be uncomfortable about?
