Who Do You Work For?Today is my children’s sixth birthday. I’m in meetings today, but I’ll be home (with presents!) in time to take them out for dinner and ice cream.

I work for them. I work to feed them, protect them, teach them, and help them. They deserve this from me. I owe it to them.

I work for my wife, Lisa, who I’ve been with for half of my life now. She stood by me while I was paying my dues in business. She struggled with me. Now she gets to enjoy all that a thriving business brings. She deserves this. I owe it to her.

I also work for my parents, who brought me to America, the most entrepreneurial country in the world, from the former Soviet Union when I was two years old. They had no money, and to get us here they took a risk I’m not sure I could take today. I owe them this work, even when I’m tired, or not in the mood.

I work for my clients, the business owners of fast-growing companies, because they deserve my best effort. (“Let’s run through the tape,” said one of my best clients, the owner of a 9-figure firm, before a recent workshop for his staff. My kind of client!)

I work for my prospects, even if they don’t know me yet, because they would benefit greatly from working with me. If you’re a closely-held business interested in aggressive growth, you need to know me, and you’d be smart to work with me. I believe this completely, and it’s why I work. (Do you believe this about your prospects? Because you absolutely should.)

I make the calls, get on the airplanes, have the meetings, lead the workshops, and help people as much as I can and as hard as I can. And when it’s not immediately easy, I think about the people above, and it becomes easy. And it becomes fun.

I know why I work.

Do you? Why do you work? Who do you work for?
